Archery

Ages: Kindergarten – Grade 3

Curriculum We Cover: For the younger kids we have fun with fingerblasters! Use foam finger darts to practice aim and coordination.

 

 

 

Ages: Grade 4 – Adult

Participants learn about archery equipment, technique and safety guidelines prior to target shooting at the forest or indoor archery range. 

Curriculum We Cover:
- Parts of the bow
- Parts of the arrow
- Proper firing technique
- Equipment care
- Safety rules and firing commands


Canoeing

Ages: Kindergarten – Adult

Offered late spring and early fall, this program provides basic instruction in flat water canoeing skills.  Participants will learn small craft safety, equipment use, and basic paddling techniques while exploring a portion of Wolfe Lake.  Keep your eyes open as sightings of loons, turtles and other wildlife are common.

Curriculum We Cover:
A tour of Wolfe Lake in a voyageur canoe! Learn incredible facts about canoe travel while enjoying a scenic trip past Mosquito Island or to Turtle Bay.

Ages: Grade 3 – Adult

Curriculum We Cover:
- Choosing a PFD and paddle
- Parts of the canoe
- Paddling skills: J, back, pry, and draw strokes
- Turning your canoe
- Water safety


Fire Building

Ages: Grade 3 – Adult

Technique and the safety precautions involved in choosing a good campfire location are covered as students work in small groups to design their own pit and build a fire.

Curriculum We Cover:
- Fire safety
- Choosing/creating a location
- Elements needed for a fire
- Safe collection of materials
- Construction options


Shelter Building

Ages: Grade 3 – Adult

Whatever the season, whether snowy, wet or dry, participants can learn how to construct a usable shelter with minimal supplies and resources.  This activity involves creative thinking and group cooperation.  Arrangements can be made for overnight camping in the shelters.

- Types and characteristics of animal shelters
- Human needs for survival
- Radiative and conductive heat loss
- Useable materials
- Construction options

Orienteering

Ages:Grade 3 – Adult

Orienteering is a recognized sport that uses a compass and map to navigate through a series of checkpoints.  Participants learn the parts of a compass, how to take bearings and read a map, along with other related skills. 

IAWAH’s orienteering courses offer a range challenge for varying skill levels.

Curriculum We Cover:
- Directions and degrees
- Parts of a compass
- Taking a bearing
- Finding a bearing
- Skill appropriate orienteering course or challenges
